OUR HANDY GUIDE TO FOWEY AND THE LOCAL AREA
Gardens
You are spoilt for choice for gardens locally! We can highly recommend the 13 Great Gardens of Cornwall, the closest being The Eden Project, Lanhydrock, Tregrehan, and The Lost Gardens of Heligan. We also really like Pine Lodge Gardens just outside St Austell
Walking
There are so many hundreds of miles of walks around Fowey and Cornwall that it’s hard to know where to start…
We personally use the iWalk Cornwall and the AllTrails apps to find great routes. Visit our social media for inspiration too, and feel free to drop us a message if you want some specific ideas. Lucy Daniels is a fantastic local walking tour guide, we highly recommend booking!
Coast Paths
Fowey is on the South West coastal path – 630 miles of walks that wind their way around the cliffs and countryside that make up the south west coast. Heading south from Fowey will take you past Polridmouth Cove, The Gribbin, Polkerris, Par Sands and then Carlyon Bay. Across the River Fowey and you take in Polruan, Lantic Bay, Lansallos Beach and on towards Polperro.
Hall Walk
A 4 mile circular walk taking 2-3 hours (and two ferries!) that shows the best the Fowey estuary has to offer.
Walk through Fowey and head across on the Bodinnick Ferry. Follow the water down to Pont, cross over and make for Polruan. We find the Luuger provides a great resting spot for a well deserved drink before heading back on the passenger ferry for Fowey.
Readymoney Cove
As you walk through Fowey, stroll along The Esplanade and the cove is right at the end! A lovely beach shop/cafe and facilities here too. Great for swimming with a summer pontoon. Walk up the coast path to explore the old ruins of St Catherine’s Castle overlooking the cove. Dogs are banned during July and August.
Whitehouse Pool
A tidal pool close to the centre of Fowey, great for kids to have a safe splash-about at low tide. There is also Red Rocket Café here with brilliant water views.
Polridmouth Cove
If you stay on the coast path south of Fowey, you will then reach Polridmouth Cove. A pretty little beach which is the inspiration of Daphne Du Maurier’s “Rebecca”. Overlooking the cove is Gribbin Head. It’s a tough walk up, but the views are worth it. The Gribbin Daymark (white and red building that looks like a lighthouse!) is owned by the National Trust and they hope to re-open the stairway to the top on a Sundays in the summer.
Polkerris
The coast path past Gribbin Head leads to Polkerris, and is a favourite local stretch. It is a more tricky section with very thin paths and steep drops over the cliffs with little to no barriers. Not one for dogs and children who like to run ahead! To drive to Polkerris, leave Fowey and follow the road to Par/St Austell. Polkerris Beach is a wonderful family beach having a restaurant, shop, toilets, hire equipment and a nice pub sitting just near the beach. The hill down to the car park is very steep and narrow and you will have to reverse if you meet a car – alternatively there’s an overflow car park at the top of the hill. Sam’s other restaurant is at Polkerris – in peak season you will want to book Sam’s well in advance. Dogs are banned on the beach from Easter till October.
Par Sands
Be careful when parking here, the first large car park is privately owned, and the other smaller car parks are Council owned, so when paying by app make sure you are paying for the right one! There is a great coffee wagon, pasty hut and beach shop in the first car park, and the public toilets are located at the council car park opposite the duck pond. Further along still is the Par Sands café and restaurant.
There are sand dunes that separate the beach from the little road. It is dog friendly all year round so expect lots of four legged friends!
Carlyon Bay Beach
A lovely spot in summer when the pop ups start to open! Lots to eat, music to dance too and a great big beach (two miles long!) so you still have your own space. Be careful when swimming from here, as the beach is steep, and there is a shelf under the water meaning the floor drops away very quickly. The beach is dog friendly all year.
Charlestown
A fantastic harbour village for food. There are two beaches, one each side of the harbour, both rather stony. Lots going on in Charlestown so easy to make a day of a trip here - watch out for any film crews who may about.
Porthpean and Pentewan
Both good beaches the other side of St Austell, both offering water sports hire. Porthpean is a good rock pooling beach while Pentewan is larger and has The Hubbox – a good burger restaurant on the beach. Also opening in 2025 at Pentewan is a new Asian restaurant.
Mevagissey
Another historic fishing port, similar to Fowey and Charlestown in that it has lots of charm, shops, and restaurants. However, we highly recommend getting the ferry from Fowey to Mevagissey to make the most of the day out! It’s an amazing way to get an alternative view of the coastline, and it’s not unusual to see wildlife such as dolphins and seals on the trip.
