SHOPPING

There are several well-loved brand stores in Fowey such as Seasalt, Joules, Fat Face, and Mountain Warehouse. But the real charm of the town lies in the wide range of boutique, unique and independent shops. You can spend hours browsing for clothes, homewares, crafts, glassware, art, antiques, books, seaside knick-knacks, traditional children’s toys and don't forget the old-fashioned sweet shop!

There are also top-quality bakeries where you can find bread, rolls, pasties, cakes and treats. There may be no large supermarket, but with two local convenience stores and a Boots, you'll still find everything you need. There is a Co-op around 5 miles away, Asda and Tesco are around 7 miles, and all the major supermarkets will deliver online shopping as well.

THINGS TO SEE & DO

Fowey is an estuary river town, so the obvious thing to do is spend a day messing about on the water! There are many kayak, canoe, and boat hire centres that go from both Quays. If you don’t have the strongest sea legs, then why not just take the passenger ferry over to Polruan for an afternoon! If you fancy going a little further, you can take the ferry round to Mevagissey too.

In the centre of Fowey there is a sweet little aquarium, and a local museum – both are worth a peek! Fowey has a 14th century church in the centre of the town and a 15th century fort, St. Catherine’s Castle, on the edge of the estuary.

The closest beach to town is Readymoney Cove, which has clean sands and is perfect for swimming. A swimming platform is moored off the beach during the summer months. There is also a fabulous little shop for all your seaside needs. However, no dogs are allowed between Easter and October.
There is a secret sea-pool hidden away at Whitehouse Pier which is perfect for a refreshing paddle while looking out over the estuary. It can only be found at certain times, so check those tide times!
Within a 5/10-minute drive, you can be at Polridmouth, Polkerris or Par Sands, and within a half hour drive you’ll find Carlyon Bay, Charlestown, Porthpean, Pentewan or Mevagissey.
An hour’s drive and you are on the north coast of Cornwall – this is where you will find the more dramatic views, coastline and good surfing on some of the beaches.

Bit of a thrill seeker? Then Cornwall has some fantastic opportunities to get your adrenaline buzz! Hang Loose at Eden have zip wires and giant air swings, Adrenaline Quarry near Liskeard is perfect for a day full of crazy activities, and Retallack Watersports near Newquay is the place to head for total-wipeout style aqua adventures.

There are hundreds of miles of fantastic walks in Cornwall. The South West Coastal Path alone winds 630 miles around the county, and The Saints Way is 27 miles from Fowey on the south coast, right across to Padstow on the north coast. The Fowey Hall Walk is much more manageable at 4 miles and is the best way to see Fowey from all angles! We also particularly enjoy the Gribbin Head walk, especially when the Daymark is open in the summer. Whether you enjoy the sea, woods, rivers, moors or fields, you will not be disappointed with the walks in Cornwall.

The closest major attractions are The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan. They really do offer something for everyone and make an enjoyable day-trip. For green-fingered travellers, there are also many other great gardens; in fact, there are officially 12 Great Gardens of Cornwall!

Cornwall is very famous for its tin mining heritage, and you will see many old engine houses dotted across the landscape. The countryside directly surrounding Fowey and St Austell is locally known as Clay Country due to its abundance of China Clay. Wheal Martyn is an interesting museum that gives a good insight into the history and culture of the clay works, and if you take the walk to the top of the grounds it overlooks a modern working pit.

There are lots of National Trust and English Heritage sites across Cornwall, as well as stately homes and gardens. Some of our local favourites are Lanhydrock House, Pencarrow House, Restormel Castle and Caerhays Estate.

Thinking of bringing your 4-legged friend to Fowey? They will love it! Par Sands Beach and Polridmouth Cove are only a few minutes away and are dog-friendly all year round; Readymoney Cove in town allows them to play from October to Easter. Many of the pubs are pup-friendly, and Lazy Jacks even sell doggy ice cream! Sams on the Beach at Polkerris have a Waggy Wednesday during the winter, when you can take your dog for dinner followed by a walk on the beach – special pet friendly treats are on offer too.

If you’re looking for somewhere just for the kids, check out Camel Creek, Springfields, Dairyland, Kidzworld, Indoor Active, Newquay Zoo or Porfell Wildlife Centre. This is just small selection of the many dozens of places for families to visit! Pop into our office during your stay to pick up our “best days out” pack, full of leaflets and vouchers.

Don’t forget to follow Fowey Homes Holidays on social media for inspiration on days out. When booking your trip with us, please feel free to ask for some personal recommendations - we’d love to help you discover the real hidden gems of Cornwall and get the most of out of your time in beautiful Fowey.

  • Parking

The cottage is in the small village of Bodinnick, which is connected to Fowey by a ferry across a short space of river.
In the village is a wonderful, 400-year-old pub called The Old Ferry Inn.
Close by is the Polruan where there are 2 more pubs and a cafe near the harbour where you can get the foot ferry to Fowey.
Following the coast, you can walk to the stunning beach at Lantic Bay, its not always an easy walk and there's no facilities but its quiet and picturesque cove.

Below is our guide on Fowey, and further into Cornwall...

"Wonderful stay - if you want to get away and relax, but be closer enough to great walks, pubs and a few small towns to wonder - this is for you. The place itself is nice and spacious and the view is very relaxing. We were there when there was horrendous storms - and felt super cosy in this wonderful home."

"We had a great stay at three quarter cottage and would definitely return and recommend. Everything we needed was supplied. It is a very clean and modern home and there was more than enough space for us and our sausage dog. The views of the estuary and local walks from the cottage were excellent."

"Firstly I must say that the description of this home does not fully describe how delightful it is. It’s a beautiful house, newly decorated/built with many 5* features. Beautifully furnished with rainforest showers, TVs in all bedrooms, low level motion sensor lighting, large deck area with plenty of seating and a lovely, well equipped kitchen. It’s bright and airy with plenty of space to enjoy your stay. It is also very quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of Fowey town. We loved popping into Fowey for breakfast, boat trips, dinner and then coming back to this lovely house. We had delicious meals (and a few gins) at the Old Ferry Inn and enjoyed watching the world go by on the river from the upstairs terrace. A couple of tips, bring a good torch as the walk up from the ferry at night is dark. If you like to wrap up after a shower bring a big bath towel as the towels supplied are on the small side."

"We had an excellent week’s holiday. The house has a lovely view and big terrace with lots of seating options - something for everyone which is great. The walk down the hill to the ferry is very convenient, and coming back up was also easy. Even at night it is clearly well used by pedestrians so we felt quite safe coming back from dinner in town. The house itself is well equipped, clean, and tidy. Good WiFi connection which is a godsend in Cornwall. Lovely stay and would highly recommend."

"We had an incredible 13 days here - a very well maintained, spacious, bright, and modern place. Poised on the side of the valley with lovely view over the river. Very quick and easy ferry to Fowey by foot or car. Enjoyed a run along Hall Walk with views of the sea and river. Would highly recommend to all, plenty of space for our family of 3. We visited several beaches, all of which were beautiful in rain or in the sun. Cornwall is such a special place!"

“This place is located in Bodinnick and enables simple access to Fowey via the ferry for cars or via foot. The house has great views across the estuary from the decking and contains 3 bedrooms - 1 large with ensuite and 2 smaller double rooms. The check in was straightforward and communication was always clear. I would reccomend this to anyone looking to visit the area.”

“The most gorgeous home away from home. Nestled in the perfect location for walks, pub grub, and drives to explore Cornwall. We wanted to base ourselves somewhere quiet, to relax and explore with the dog and this couldn’t have been more perfect. Very homely, a fantastic light airy space, everything you need to base. The weather took a turn for us so as much as we enjoyed getting out and about, the house was also perfect for slow starts, dinners, relaxing. Would highly recommend.”

“Our family with two teenagers had a great week in this clean, stylish and modern cottage set in a beautiful garden with a stunning large deck area with plenty of loungers, bbq, brazier etc. A huge master bedroom (en-suite ) plus two double rooms and another wet room meant we had plenty of space. The private parking space is very nearby. Being right next to the car and foot ferry from Bodinnick to Fowey, it couldn’t be easier to get to the charming town of Fowey for independent shops, cafes, a beach, boat hire and galleries.”

A lovely cottage with great outdoor space with decking and BBQ. The cottage was cosy even when the weather was blowing a gale outside and very private/quiet. Super responsive hots, delightfully located home, beautiful view, and outstanding cottage with everything we needed. We just loved our stay here. The cottage provided a perfect touch of modern, stylish and cozy. Perfect home for traveling with pups as well. The kitchen and main living space open directly onto the huge deck and we just loved it. The view across to Fowey and the adorable lambs in the distance, it was just all picture perfect. We had a few things to figure out when we arrived, but the communication was quick and everything resolved so quickly. We hope to make it back and only wish we could have stayed longer than seven nights. For a nice quiet, relaxing getaway this is the place to go. We explored beaches, hiked and just enjoyed the perfect gorgeous weather. All the tips for eating and going places were ideal as well. We have been airbnb hosts of our own home in the past, and we know how much work it can be - this home hits the mark. We just could not recommend the Three Quarter Cottage More!

A great cottage in a beautiful part of the world. A lovely balance between being secluded but within easy walkable reach of Fowey and all it has to offer. We loved the place and the location and had a great break with trips to the Eden project, boat hire, crabbing, days on the beach and lots of amazing food! The cottage is well designed and has everything you’d need and more. It’s spacious, clean and very nicely furnished with lovely outside space too.
